Belphegor, Austria’s sensational blackened death metal artists are bringing their electrifying sounds to Gramercy Theater!
The band was formed in Salzburg in 1991 (under the moniker Betrayer) by vocalist and bassist Maxx, guitarists Helmuth and Sigurd, and drummer Chris. They released 2 demo tapes (Kruzifixion and Unborn Blood) after which they named themselves after Belphegor (a demon and one of the seven princes of hell). The band’s had numerous line-up changes over the years and currently consists of Helmuth Lehner (vocals, guitars, bass guitar) and Serpenth (bass guitar, vocals). When playing live, the band also has Tomasz ‘Nefastus’ Janiszewski on drums and Sascha ‘Impaler’ on guitars and backing vocals. While the band was able to quickly make a name for itself in Austria, more than a decade passed by before they achieved international recognition. Their 2008 album (Bondage Goat Zombie) landed a spot on the German charts and their 2011 release (Blood Magick Necromance) hit #48 on Billboards’ US Top Heatseekers chart. Their latest album Conjuring the Dead hit #14 on the Heatseekers chart, #33 on the Austrian albums chart, and was generally well received by the critics. The band puts a European spin on black metal that’s competently executed and they’ve had a stellar career with 10 studio albums, 2 EPs, 1 live album, and 11 music videos.
