Charles Phoenix, California's sensational and multi talented artist is bringing his signature show to the Gramercy Theater!
Charles Phoenix was born in Ontario (California) in 1962 and is a pop culture humorist, historian, author and chef. His body of work focuses on and celebrates 1950s and 1960s Kitsch (art or other objects that appeal to popular rather than high art tastes and are sometimes appreciated in a knowingly ironic or humorous way) and Americana (artifacts - paintings, prints and drawings; license plates or entire vehicles, household objects, tools and weapons; flags, plaques and statues, and so on - related to the history, geography, folklore and cultural heritage of the United States). His motto is "Get in touch with your inner Americana, embrace it, have a sense of humor about it, and proudly share it with the whole wide world" and he describes himself as "a man with a particular Pee-Wee Herman, Martha Stewart and Huell Howser sensibility". He's best known for his Retro Slide Shows; a collection of vintage film slides depicting mid-century American life and culture along with his funny commentary. He's also written 9 books, starred in 2 films, and appeared on many TV shows, most notably as a recurring judge on the Food Network series Cake Wars and as a frequent guest commentator on NPR and KCET.
