Dark Tranquillity, Sweden’s sensational melodic death metal artists are bringing their signature sounds to the Gramercy Theater!
Dark Tranquillity was formed (under the moniker Septic Boiler) in Billdal (Sweden) in 1989 by vocalist Mikael Stanne and guitarist Niklas Sundin. The band's been through many line up changes over the years and it currently consists of Mikael (lead vocals), Niklas (guitar), Anders Jivarp (drums), Martin Brändström (keyboards and programming), and Anders Iwers (bass). When performing live, the line up also includes guitarists Johan Reinholdz and Christopher Amott. They’ve had a stellar career with 11 studio albums, 2 compilation albums, 2 video albums, 15 music videos, and 5 extended plays. Their musical style falls is best described as melodic death metal (a subgenre of death metal that employs highly melodic guitar riffs, often borrowing from traditional heavy metal). They, along with fellow Swedish bands In Flames and At the Gates, are widely regarded the the pioneers of Gothenburg metal (also known as Swedish death metal); a branch of Scandinavian death metal that evolved into a more accessible amalgamation of death metal intensity, a bit of progressive metal experimentation, and more traditional late 70s and early 80s British metal, with its catchy, groove oriented riffs and twin guitar lead lines. Their 2013 album (Construct) was critically acclaimed for its melodrama and darkness.
