Jidenna Theodore Mobisson was born in Wisconsin Rapids in 1985 and is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. His musical style is described as a blend of hip hop, contemporary R&B (a genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop, and dance), and pop music. He cites KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane, and Highlife (a genre that originated in Ghana at the turn of the 20th century and incorporated the traditional harmonic 9th, as well as melodic and the main rhythmic structures in traditional Akan music, and married them with Western instruments) as his main influences. He’s had a stellar career with 1 studio album, 1 extended play, 8 music videos, 8 singles, and he’s collaborated with Roman GianArthur, Janelle Monáe, Quavo, St. Beauty, and Deep Cotton. He’s also renowned for his unique fashion sense and he describes his look as “heavily inspired by the Harlem Renaissance with hints of traditional West African design…a marriage of European and African aesthetics.” He’s received many accolades including a Soul Train Music Award (for Best New Artist) and he’s been nominated for a Grammy Award ( for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration).
