SoMo, Texas’ sensational R&B inspired pop music artist is bringing his signature sounds to Gramercy Theater!
SoMo (born Joseph Anthony Somers-Morales) was born in Denison (Texas) in 1987 and he is of Caucasian and Mexican descent. Even though his father was in a jazz rock band called Duck Soup, Joseph spent his childhood and teenage years away from music. That changed when his mom gave him a piano as a Christmas present when he was 21 years old. He taught himself how to play by ear and decided to use a contraction of his hyphenated last name as his stage name. In 2009 he started doing covers of popular songs and posting them on YouTube. He kept honing his craft and over the next couple of years, his YouTube channel had amassed over 200 million views. His popularity grew even further with his mashup of Drake’s 2011 hit single Take Care (featuring Rihanna). He began to work on original music in 2012 and the following year, he released his debut mixtape (My Life). It was a blend of R&B spirit with pop soul that demonstrated SoMo’s dynamic voice and song-writing prowess and it led to a record deal with Republic Records shortly in October 2013.
