Stryper, California’s sensational Christian heavy metal artists are bringing their signature sounds to Gramercy Theater!
The band was formed in 1983 in Orange County by brothers Michael Sweet (lead vocals, lead guitar), Robert Sweet (drums), and Eric Johnson (bass). Initially, they called themselves Roxx Regime but they soon changed their name and musical message to reflect their Christian beliefs. They derived their new name from a verse in the King James Version of the Bible; But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed - Isaiah 53:5. Robert also turned Stryper into an acronym for Salvation Through Redemption, Yielding Peace, Encouragement and Righteousness. The band has been through many line-up changes over the years and currently consists of Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar), Robert Sweet (drums, percussion), Tim Gaines (bass guitar, backing vocals, keyboards, piano), and Oz Fox (guitar, backing vocals). They became the first Christian metal band to achieve mainstream recognition and they’ve had a stellar career 11 studio albums, 4 live albums, 4 compilation albums, 6 video albums, 13 music videos, 1 extended play, and 9 singles. They’ve sold over 10 million records worldwide and in 2011, they won the Reader’s Choice award for Best Christian / Gospel Artists and Bands.
