Tigran Hamasyan, Armenia's sensational jazz artist is bringing his signature sounds to the Gramercy Theater!
Tigran Hamasyan was born in Gyumri (Armenia) in 1987 and is a pianist, composer, and vocalist. His musical style is best described as a blend of jazz, post bop (a modern jazz style that continues the distinguishing characteristics that separate jazz from the world of pop and rock), progressive rock (a broad subgenre of rock music that grew out of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard traditions in favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz, folk or classical music), and Armenian folk (a popular genre in Armenian music - very similar to folk music in the Caucasus - that usually uses the duduk, the kemenche, and the oud, and shares many similar songs and traditions with Georgia and Azerbaijan). He’s had a stellar career with 8 studio albums, 2 extended plays, and he's collaborated with many renowned artists such as Dhafer Youssef, Ari Hoenig, Lars Danielsson, Stéphane Galland, Serj Tankian, Valeri Tolstov, Tom Duprey, Oliver Bogé, Sam Minaie, Jeff Ballard, Arve Henriksen, Eivind Aarset, and Jan Bang. He's received many accolades including an ECHO Jazz Award, a Vilcek Prize (for Creative Promise in Contemporary Music), and 1st Prize from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.
